Rosy Tin Teacaddy 14.3.09

Rosy Tin Teacaddy

RTT are releasing their new album ‘The Homeward Stretch’ on the 1st of April – no joke – and I caught up with them in a little wine bar in the Wairarapa in New Zealand. The CD had left a moderate impact on me after the first listen, but as I’m more of a live gig kinda gal, I thought I’d better check them out in person. The bar was intimate and obviously catering for a more discerning crowd than your average corner pub. When Betty and Billy, aka Holly Jane Ewens and Andy Hummel, arrived, it was apparent they were highly anticipated and appreciated and got into it pretty much straight away.

Rosy Tin Teacaddy are basically a two piece set-up but have enlisted the talents of various friends for the recording of the CD. But tonight’s gig was just the two of them with their acoustic guitars, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s all they needed!

Right from the start it was apparent that they have known each other for a long time; perfectly in tune with each other, their voices created a complex and complimentary array of sounds. The vocals were strong and displayed an interesting subtlety of range. Never sounding forced or strained, and certainly not overly rehearsed.

They obviously felt comfortable in such an intimate environment, in fact they seemed to lap up the close attention being paid by the audience. The dead-pan delivery of explanatory notes to the songs was a pleasure to witness, as well as their infectious love for meaningful fun music.

RTT’s sound can easily be placed in the Indie/Folk genre, but with the added bonus of witty song-writing and some wry kiwi humour. The lyrics are thoughtful, provocative and sometimes downright naughty. And don’t be fooled by ‘Visitors’ knocking politely on your door!

All in all, a very pleasant and uplifting way to spend a Saturday night, and I look forward to seeing them with the full band. 10/10

And here to delight you:
